His elder brother died in infancy, making Leopold heir to the throne. He served in the Belgian military, reaching the rank of lieutenant-general, and also served in the Belgian Senate. The marriage became unhappy, and they separated. Leopold had many mistresses, notably Caroline Lacroix, a 16-year-old French prostitute, with whom he had two sons.

Leopold II's significance lies in his dual role as Belgian monarch and private colonial ruler. However, his legacy is dominated by his ownership and administration of the Congo Free State. Using Henry Morton Stanley and the mercenary Force Publique, Leopold extracted ivory and rubber through forced labor, accompanied by systematic brutality including torture, murder, and amputation of hands and feet. Estimates of the Congolese population decline during his rule range from 1 million to 15 million, due to epidemic disease, reduced birth rate, violence, and famine. Leopold never personally visited the Congo. He died without surviving legitimate sons; the current Belgian king descends from his nephew and successor, Albert I.
